Dr Rose Penfold is currently an Academic Clinical Fellow (ST1) in Geriatric Medicine at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation trust. I have longstanding interests in health policy and management, global health and medical education, completing a Master of Public Health at Harvard University and most recently a National Medical Director’s clinical fellowship at NHS England & Improvement.
Since medical school, I have developed an increased understanding of the unique challenges and barriers faced by women in medical professions and have sought to raise awareness of these and strategies to overcome them. This year, four NHS colleagues and I co-founded initiative Women Speakers in Healthcare, aiming for balanced gender representation at all healthcare events, with parity of opportunity for all. We have created the largest database of women speakers in the UK and seek to promote opportunities for women speakers across healthcare professions.
I am excited to be elected as a Junior Doctor Representative for the London region and to promote MWF’s values and key aims, to facilitate development and training opportunities for women and to form local networks with other women and male allies equally passionate about increasing gender diversity and opportunity.
