Susan Ward qualified in 1980 from Nottingham University. She lived in hall on campus for the whole time as a medical student, working as a hall tutor looking after 15 undergraduates for the clinical years of the course.

She is married to an engineer and has two grown-up children.

She has been a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist since 1998 in Mansfield near Nottingham; having spent three years as an anatomy demonstrator, then as an SHO on the Nottingham general surgery/urology  rotation to obtain FRCS . Her obstetrics and gynaecology training was all done in the hospitals around the East Midlands and included a research MD on cardiac output in pregnancy.

Throughout her career, she has been heavily involved in medical education having been a College Tutor, Training Programme Director and Head of School in charge of O&G training for the East Midlands. As an Associate Dean she was responsible for setting up the Foundation Programme in the East Midlands and has been Director of Medical Education in her Trust. The RCOG trainees’ committee awarded her the inaugural ‘National Trainer of the Year’ Award in 2015 for her contribution to training.

She has been involved the work of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists for years:  examining and question writing for the DRCOG and MRCOG examinations, chaired the SAQ Committee and was the Vice-Chair of the Examination and Assessment Committee between 2015 and 2019.

For five years she represented East Midlands Fellows on RCOG Council until being elected Vice-president for Education for a three-year term 2019-2022.

She has been a member of MWF since she was a registrar and has helped organise several conferences and many medical student careers evenings over the last 30 years. She was national MWF President 2007-2008 when MWF celebrated its 90 year anniversary.
