Medical Women's Federation calls for the decriminalisation of abortion in the UK

Following the news that a 44-year-old woman has been sentenced to 28 months in prison for using abortion pills after the legal time limit, The Medical Women’s Federation urges the UK Government to decriminalise abortion in the UK. The 1861 Act which criminalises abortion and is still in place today, is an out-of-date piece of legislation which was written when women did not have many of the rights they have today. Women, who may be in difficult situations, deserve to access safe abortion services without fear of persecution or judgement. Decriminalisation would acknowledge abortion as a medical treatment.
