
The Medical Women’s Federation is delighted to announce that Professor Catherine Calderwood has been elected as its next President. She will formally take up the role of President-Elect at the AGM in May 2026 and will begin her Presidency in Spring 2027.

Professor Catherine Calderwood is an obstetrician in Edinburgh and professor at the University of Strathclyde with a distinguished career in clinical care, medical leadership and medical education. She has worked at national level in both Scotland and NHS England. She served as Scotland’s Chief Medical Officer from 2015 to 2020, advising the Scottish Government on national health policy and developing the principles of Realistic Medicine, promoting personalised care and shared decision-making and the important role of the clinical voice in healthcare systems.
Throughout her career she has been committed to improving outcomes for women and babies and addressing health inequalities. At home she has tried her best to bring up 3 children and enjoys being outside as much as possible.
As President Elect of the Medical Women’s Federation, Professor Calderwood brings extensive experience in clinical care, public health and national leadership, alongside a longstanding dedication to advancing women’s health and supporting women in medicine.

The conference will bring together doctors, trainees and medical students from across the UK to explore how women are shaping the future of leadership in medicine and to explore the opportunities and challenges facing women doctors today. Highlights include workshops on Women in Academic Medicine, Coaching and Managing Clinical Risk, as well as keynote sessions from Professor Bola Owolabi CBE and Professor Kamila Hawthorne MBE on differential attainment.
