MWF has written a new “Manifesto for Women Doctors”
This new manifesto was informed by discussions before, during and after a panel with invited representatives of women doctors in 20 different specialty areas, at the MWF Spring Conference 2025. Several themes and areas for action are highlighted. Over 50% of licensed registered doctors are now women.
There are actions for individuals, organisations and government. Valuing women doctors and adjusting structures to allow them to excel would improve health across the UK. With 24% of UK adults living with multiple co-morbidities and an increasingly aged population, we need more doctors who can handle complexity, balance risks and lead diverse teams. 91% of women doctors experience sexism regularly. Individuals should focus on the task, show respect and avoid personal comments. Organisations should adapt so that women are not disadvantaged. Postgraduate training requires particular improvement, to retain women doctors at this critical phase.
