The Medical Women's Federation is concerned by the latest figures released by the Medical School Council which highlight the ongoing gender imbalance in the clinical academic workforce. While there have been some improvements in the last five years, men still make up two-thirds of the clinical academic workforce with 74.4% of Professors being male.
There have been significant increases in the numbers of both male and female clinical academics taking the opportunity for part time working. Numbers have risen by 112.5% among women and 76.7% among men. MWF welcomes the opportunity for both men and women who wish to do so to work Less Than Full Time (LTFT) and sees these increasing numbers as indicating a positive shift.
The Medical Women's Federation strongly supports the Medical Schools Council's call to reverse the decline in the number of clinical academics. To meet this goal, clinical academic career pathways must be designed to attract, support and retain women doctors.
