MWF Welcomes RCPsych Position Statement on Menopause and Mental Health

The Medical Women’s Federation Welcomes RCPsych Position Statement on Menopause and Mental Health

MWF warmly welcomes the publication today of the position statement on menopause and mental health by the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych).

This important and timely statement provides clear, evidence-based guidance on the complex interplay between hormonal change and mental health during the menopause transition. By setting out the clinical considerations and emphasising the need for informed, compassionate and gender-responsive care, the RCPsych has made a significant contribution to improving understanding among clinicians, policymakers and the public.

For too long, the mental health dimensions of menopause have been under-recognised or misunderstood. The MWF particularly welcomes the statement’s focus on accurate assessment, the avoidance of misdiagnosis, and the importance of ensuring women are offered appropriate treatment and support tailored to their individual needs.

The Medical Women’s Federation fully endorses the RCPsych position statement and its recommendations.

As an organisation committed to advancing women’s health and supporting women in medicine, we recognise the profound impact that menopause can have on wellbeing, work and quality of life. Clear national leadership in this area is both necessary and overdue. We hope this statement will help drive greater awareness, informed clinical practice, and meaningful improvements in care for women across the UK.
